Showers of Frogs

On 17th August 1865, a freak rainstorm covered about 3 acres of Maxwelltown, Dumfries in froglets. A fortnight before, the tracks at Lanark Railway Station were covered in tadpoles after 5 minutes of rain.

Poor Lanark

Before the 19th Century, Lanark was so poor the butcher wouldn’t kill a beast until every cut of meat was bought ahead of time. The town crier of Lanark, known there as the Skellyman would advertise when a beast was up for sale.
